Tick Safe Zones

How can I help reduce ticks on my property?

  • Keep your lawn mowed regularly and trim all shrubs to reduce habitat where rodents concentrate.
  • Remove brush and wood piles from the property
  • Move bird feeders away from the house
  • Trim up trees and brush to allow more sunlight into the property
  • Avoid landscape plants that deer like to eat
  • Seal up stone walls and small openings around your home to keep mice and chipmunks away
  • Create a 3’ border of wood chips or crushed stone between the lawn and the woods
  • Trim up all brushy areas and remove trimmings off site

Where do ticks live and where do you treat for them?

  • The first 10' border of grass that meets the woods line
  • 15' to 20' into the woods
  • Tall grass and weeds
  • Low brush (ticks are usually found up to 36")
  • Ornamental ground cover
  • Landscape beds
  • Areas immediately around stone walls, porches and sheds
  • Leaf litter
  • Brush piles and areas around wood piles
